About Us
Frederic Ozanam, a young student, who wanted to “wrap the whole world in a network of charity”, founded the Society
of St Vincent de Paul in Paris on 3 April 1833. He placed the Society under the patronage of St Vincent de Paul, ‘the
Father of the Poor’. That is where the title SVP or SVDP or Vincentians comes from. It is one of the oldest charitable,
social and humanitarian organisations in the world. Today the Society is established in 132 countries with over one million
members.
St Joseph’s has a Conference which meets weekly, is open to all men and women and those of other faiths. We have, in
common, a desire to serve poor and suffering people- the homeless, the sick, the lonely and the elderly. Generally this
is attempted on a one-to-one basis and is confidential. We work with other groups of goodwill in relieving need and
addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them Vincentians see ‘the face of Christ’.
St Joseph’s members visit the housebound, some local residential homes, the hospital, participate in furniture
distribution and help those in crisis in a material way wherever possible. We have links with India and Sudan too. All
full members have been cleared by CRB and have been vetted in the parish. If you would like more information or wish to
join please contact us through the Parish Office. You can also look on the national web
site: www.svp.org.uk
